EPHESUS (makes for fascinating reading in Wikipedia)...an ancient Greek/Roman seaside (then)city...the sea has since receded.
Built in the 10th century BC Ephesus was an ancient Greek city on the coast of Ionia (eastern Mediterranean) in the now Turkish province of Izmir. During the classical Greek era it was one of the 12 cities of the Ionian League and it flourished after it came under the control of the ancient Roman Republic in 129BC. Mark Antony was welcomed by Ephesus for periods when he was proconsul and in 32BC with Cleopatra when he gathered his fleet of 800ships before his defeat at the sea battle of Actium with Octavius (later Emperor Augustus).
When Augustus became emperor in 27BC the most important change for Ephesus was when he made the city the capital of proconsular Asia (which covered western Asia Minor) and it entered an era of prosperity, becoming the seat of government and a major centre of commerce. According to the the then contemporary philosopher and historian Strabo, Ephesus was second in importance and size only to Rome.
The city was destroyed by the Goths in 263AD and this and the silting up of the harbour, marked the decline of the city's splendour. However, emperor Constantine the Great rebuilt much of the city and erected new public baths. The city was partially destroyed again by an earthquake in 614AD.
Ephesus was one of the seven churches of Asia cited in the Book of Revelations. St. Paul lived and preached in Ephesus for a time and it is thought the Gospel of St. John may have been written there.

Whilst in Ephesus and revisiting/working on these images I find I am endeavouring to transport myself to these locations during their ancient Roman period and imagining what it could have been like...probably heavily influenced by "Hollywood" and rose coloured glasses, but the grandeur is evident in the physical examples that exist, even though reassembled for present day consumption.
Opposite and below are both the tall and grand Library of Celsus as well as the monumental Gate of Augustus. Others have their own captions.
